Cytomegalovirus infection monitored by quantitative real-time PCR in critically ill patients

(CMV) reactivation has been widely documented in the past 10 years in critically ill patients [1]. Conversely, few data are available on burn patients despite experimental studies showing that these patients are predisposed to herpes virus infections [2]. To our knowledge, only two studies reported the incidence of CMV infection in burn patients using a modern technique , such as PCR, which has...

Detection and monitoring of cytomegalovirus infection in renal transplant patients by quantitative real-time PCR.

OBJECTIVES To establish a sensitive and specific real-time PCR for quantitation of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA in clinical specimens. SUBJECTS AND METHODS In a prospective study, CMV DNA was quantified in blood samples of 255 kidney recipients with and without CMV-related symptoms between the years 2000 and 2005 in Kuwait. In a selected group of patients, the effect of anti-CMV chemotherapy was...

Detection of human cytomegalovirus DNA by real-time quantitative PCR.

A real-time PCR assay was developed to quantify human cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA. This assay was used to demonstrate a higher CMV DNA load in plasma of bone marrow transplant patients than in that of blood donors. The CMV load was higher in CMV antigen-positive patients than in antigen-negative patients.

METHODS Studies in which critically ill immunocompetent adults were monitored for CMV infection in the intensive care unit (ICU) were reviewed. RESULTS CMV infection occurs in 0 to 36% of critically ill patients, mostly between 4...
